The Million Dollar
Homepage was a very successful and viral marketing stunt back in 2005 where people could buy 1 pixel worth of
advertising space for 1 US dollar (with a minimum advertising surface of 10×10 pixels).
At the time, the million dollar homepage was implemented by using a single image which contains all ads stitched
together, and an image map to link
the image's various parts to their corresponding URLs.
The demo below is a silly recreation of the million dollar homepage which uses CSS grid.
The grid has one hundred rows and one hundred columns. Each reserved ad space is represented by a div
element that's
positioned onto the grid by using the grid-area CSS property. The original image from the million
dollar homepage is used here, but I've made an effort to remove any explicit material I could find.
